O nstage, they were the personification of unity — even family. The four men dressed the same —in leather motorcycle jackets, weathered jeans, sneakers — had the same dark hair color, shared the same last name. They seemed to think the same thoughts and breathe the same energy. Johnny and Dee Dee played with legs astride, looking unconquerable. There was a pleasure and spirit, a palpable commonality, in what the Ramones were doing onstage together. When they left the stage, that fellowship fell away. They would climb into their van and ride to a hotel or their next show in silence. The Ramones likely inspired more bands than anybody since the Beatles; the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Nirvana, Metallica, the Misfits, Green Day and countless others have owed much of their sound and creed to what the band made possible. The Ramones made a model that almost anybody could grab hold of: basic chords, pugnacity and a noise that could lay waste to — or awaken — anything. But they paid a heavy cost for their achievement.

The Ramones may or may not have invented punk rock, but they were inarguably the most important band in punk history, creating the stylistic prototype that would be followed by countless bands who emerged in their wake.
They are often cited as the first true punk rock group. All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname "Ramone", although none of them were biologically related; they were inspired by Paul McCartney of The Beatles , who would check into hotels as "Paul Ramon". Recognition of the band's importance built over the years, and they are now mentioned in many assessments of all-time great rock music, such as number 26 in the Rolling Stone magazine list of the " Greatest Artists of All Time " [8] and number 17 in VH1 's " Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". The original members of the band met in and around the middle-class neighborhood of Forest Hills in the New York City borough of Queens. John Cummings and Thomas Erdelyi had both been in a high-school garage band from to known as the Tangerine Puppets. The Ramones began taking shape in early when Cummings and Colvin invited Hyman to join them in a band. Colvin wanted to play guitar and sing, Cummings would also play guitar and Hyman would play drums. The lineup was to be completed with their friend Richie Stern on bass. However, after only a few rehearsals it became clear that Richie Stern could not play bass, so in addition to singing, Colvin switched from guitar to bass and Cummings became the only guitarist.
